The India-US trade negotiations have entered a crucial phase, with both sides moving towards finalising a bilateral trade agreement that could strengthen economic cooperation and open new opportunities, US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor said on Tuesday.
The remarks came as US Trade Representative (USTR) Jamieson Greer arrived in India for high-level discussions with Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal on the proposed trade pact.

Welcoming Greer’s visit, Sergio Gor said the two countries were making progress towards concluding a strong trade agreement.
“Welcome to India, @USTradeRep Ambassador Greer! Great to have you here as we drive forward our ambitious trade agenda. We are moving decisively toward finalizing a strong bilateral trade agreement that will unlock new economic opportunities for both countries and significantly deepen the U.S.-India economic partnership,” Gor said in a post on X.
Greer’s visit comes at a significant stage of negotiations between India and Washington over the proposed bilateral trade agreement (BTA).
Focus on first phase of trade pact
During his visit, Greer is scheduled to hold multiple rounds of discussions with Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal as both sides work towards finalising the framework for the first phase of the agreement.
The engagement follows chief negotiator-level talks held earlier this month, with India and the US working towards an interim trade arrangement expected to lead to a broader bilateral trade pact.
Sergio Gor had earlier said that several meetings were planned between Greer and Goyal to advance the proposed agreement.
Tariff deadline adds urgency
The negotiations have gained importance ahead of the July 24 expiry of the 10 per cent temporary tariff imposed by the US on its trading partners. The tariff, announced earlier this year, is levied in addition to existing Most Favoured Nation (MFN) duty rates.
Piyush Goyal has previously expressed confidence that India and the US are moving towards resolving outstanding issues and could conclude the first phase of the agreement by the middle of next month.
